Plug-in Solar FAQs
Solar shouldn’t be limited to people with the perfect roof.
Millions of homes have been left out of the solar revolution because traditional rooftop systems simply aren’t practical. PlugSol changes that, bringing affordable solar to flats, rented homes, listed buildings, holiday homes and properties where conventional solar isn’t an option.
Who Is Plug-In Solar For?
Thinking about solar but not ready for a full rooftop installation? PlugSol is an
affordable way to start generating your own electricity without the cost or disruption of traditional solar. The PlugSol Light 400W Kit starts from just £475, making it an easy first step towards lower energy bills and renewable energy at home.
Flat Owners and Leaseholders
You have a balcony or terrace but no access to the building roof. Plug-in solar turns that unused space into a power source without any structural changes to the building.
Renters
No permanent modifications needed. When you move, you take the system with you. No landlord permission issues, no impact on your tenancy.
Homes with Unsuitable Roofs
Old roof, wrong orientation, structural concerns, listed building or shading problems. Mount panels on your garden fence or wall instead and start generating.
First-Time Solar Users
Try solar at low cost before committing to a full rooftop installation. Our 400W kit starts from £475 and pays for itself within a few years.
Home Workers
Offset your daytime electricity use with solar power generated right outside your window. Your laptop, monitor and router can run on free energy.
What is PlugSol?
PlugSol is a plug-in solar system for UK homes that makes generating your own electricity simpler, more affordable and more accessible. Unlike traditional rooftop solar panels, PlugSol doesn’t require a large roof, expensive installation or major building work.
Our plug-in solar panels are ideal for balconies, patios, gardens, sheds, garages and homes where conventional solar isn’t practical.
Whether you own your home or rent, PlugSol gives you an easy way to generate renewable energy and reduce your reliance on the National Grid.
How does PlugSol work?
PlugSol uses high-efficiency plug-in solar panels to capture daylight and convert it into electricity for your home.
A microinverter changes the electricity into a form that can be safely used by your household appliances.
During the day, your home automatically uses the electricity generated by your plug-in solar system before drawing any additional power from the grid.
This means appliances such as fridges, freezers, broadband routers, computers and televisions can all benefit from the electricity your system is producing.
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
Yes. Plug-in solar systems are now permitted in the UK, subject to the relevant electrical standards and installation requirements.
All PlugSol products are designed to meet UK regulations, and where required, the final electrical connection should be completed by a qualified electrician to ensure your plug-in solar installation is safe and fully compliant.
Is PlugSol safe?
Yes. Every PlugSol plug-in solar system has been designed with safety as a priority.
Our systems use certified solar panels, quality microinverters and built-in safety features that automatically disconnect if the electricity supply is interrupted.
When installed correctly, PlugSol provides a safe and reliable waymto generate renewable electricity for your home.
Do I need a south-facing roof?
No. One of the biggest advantages of PlugSol is that you don’t need a traditional roof at all.
While south-facing locations generally produce the highest energy output, east and west-facing positions can also generate excellent results.
Because PlugSol isn’t limited to rooftops, it can be installed on balconies, fences, patios, gardens and other suitable outdoor spaces, giving far more homes access to solar power in the UK.
Can I install PlugSol myself?
The mounting system has been designed to be straightforward – that’s the whole point of these kits.
It is designed for simple DIY setup, no electrician, no scaffolding, no roof work. You mount the panels, plug the micro‑inverter into a standard UK socket, and it starts feeding power into your home.
Will PlugSol power my whole house?
PlugSol is designed to reduce your electricity bills by supporting your home’s daytime electricity demand rather than replacing your electricity supply altogether.
A plug-in solar system works particularly well for appliances that run throughout the day, including fridges, freezers, Wi-Fi routers, home office equipment, televisions and other everyday electrical devices. Larger appliances, such as ovens, kettles and electric showers, will continue to draw additional electricity from the grid when required.
Do solar panels work in the UK?
Yes. Modern solar panels work throughout the UK, even on cloudy days.
Solar panels generate electricity from daylight rather than direct sunshine, so your PlugSol system will continue producing renewable energy throughout the year.
Although output naturally varies depending on the weather, today’s solar technology is highly efficient and performs well in the British climate.
Do solar panels work in winter?
Yes. Solar panels continue generating electricity during winter whenever there is daylight.
Although shorter days mean less energy is produced than during summer, cold weather can actually improve solar panel efficiency.
Bright winter days often provide excellent generation, helping reduce electricity imported from the grid all year round.
What happens at night?
Like all solar panel systems, PlugSol only generates electricity while there is daylight.
After sunset, your home simply uses electricity from the National Grid in the normal way. If you decide to add battery storage in the future, excess electricity generated during the day can also be stored for use during the evening.
Where can PlugSol systems be installed?
One of the biggest advantages of PlugSol is that it can be installed almost anywhere with good access to daylight.
Suitable locations include:
- Balconies
- Patios
- Gardens
- Garden walls
- Fences
- Garages
- Sheds
- Flat roofs
- Garden offices
- Outdoor workspaces
This flexibility makes PlugSol ideal for flats, rented homes, listed buildings and properties where traditional rooftop solar isn’t possible.
Can I add more solar panels later?
Yes. One of the benefits of PlugSol is its flexibility.
Many homeowners choose to begin with a smaller plug-in solar system before expanding it later. As your electricity usage changes, additional panels can often be added, subject to the system design and current UK regulations.
Can I take PlugSol with me if I move?
Yes. Unlike traditional rooftop solar, PlugSol isn’t permanently attached to your property.
If you move house, your plug-in solar panels can usually be removed and reinstalled at your new home or business, making them an excellent choice for renters, rented business premises, first-time buyers and anyone looking for a flexible renewable energy solution.
Will I reduce my electricity bills?
Yes. By generating your own renewable electricity during the day, PlugSol reduces the amount of electricity you need to buy from the National Grid.
The amount you save depends on your household’s electricity usage, the size of your plug-in solar system and where it’s installed, but producing your own clean energy is one of the simplest ways to reduce rising electricity costs.
Does PlugSol require planning permission?
In most cases, plug-in solar panels do not require planning permission for domestic properties.
However, different rules may apply if you live in a listed building, conservation area or certain leasehold developments. If you’re unsure, our team will be happy to advise before you purchase.
What warranty does PlugSol come with?
Each component comes with its own dedicated warranty. The microinverter is covered by a 10-year warranty. Solar panels are covered for 2 years. All warranty periods start from the date of delivery. For full details, see our Warranty Policy.
Why choose PlugSol?
At PlugSol, we believe solar energy should be available to everyone, not just homeowners with the perfect roof and a large budget.
Our plug-in solar systems remove many of the barriers associated with traditional rooftop solar. There are no roof alterations, no scaffolding and no expensive installation costs. Instead, you get a flexible, affordable renewable energy solution that’s ideal for flats, rented homes, listed buildings, balconies, gardens and homes where conventional solar simply isn’t practical.
